Reduction of the Concha

Conchae are tissues that provide healthy breathing, with an average of 6 of them in the nose. The hardest working concha is the organ called the inferior nasal concha, located at the bottom of the nose. The turbinates enlarge and shrink depending on whether the inhaled air is hot, cold or polluted. When patients with allergies inhale allergic substances (dust, pollen, mold, fungus, etc.), swelling occurs the most in this concha at the bottom. Air pollution and smoking are some other factors that cause swelling in the conchae. In addition, sinusitis, rhinitis, nasal bone curvature can also cause swellings in the conchae. The most common sign of swelling of the nasal concha is nasal congestion. Since the air taken from the nose is not enough, the mouth is opened involuntarily and breath is taken from the mouth. Because of this, the air of the environment dries the mouth and upper respiratory tract. This situation becomes even more pronounced during sleep. Since nasal breathing is not sufficient, the lungs cannot get enough air, so they cannot provide enough oxygen to the body. As a result of this, the body cannot rest enough because the tissues and organs cannot get enough oxygen. One of the most important symptoms is waking up tired in the morning. Dry mouth and taste disturbance in the morning are among the symptoms seen when mouth breathing is done during the night.Radiofrequency ablation is the most commonly used method for reducing the conchae. Radiofrequency ablation creates evaporation in the tissue and causes great shrinkage in the conchae within 3-4 weeks. Radiofrequency ablation can be easily applied within 5-10 minutes with local anesthesia. After this application, the patient can return home after resting for 10 minutes. There happens no pain during and after the application and the desired effect is achieved within a week or two.

Radiofrequency Applications

Radiofrequency applications, which have been very popular in recent years, are sending radio waves at certain frequencies into the tissue through electrodes. A controlled and local temperature increase is created in the tissue by these radio waves. The application causes shrinkage and hardening in the tissue without causing any damage to the mucosa of the tissues where the application is used. Thus, the application causes a decrease in the volume of the applied tissue.Radiofrequency ablation is generally used in cases where nasal congestion occurs as a result of swelling of the nasal concha. Through this application, tissue shrinkage is provided by usage of heat. The method can be applied to patients with snoring and simple apnea, in patients with sagging and thickening of the uvula and soft palate, and more rarely in patients with swelling at the base of the tongue. Moreover, the heat applied to the tissue by radiofrequency energy causes a decrease in the secretory cells located under the mucosa. This, as an example, contributes to the reduction of undesired excessive nasal discharge in patients with allergic rhinitis. During the procedure, no incisions are made on the concha or the palate. Also, no stitches are left on the nose after the operation. It is also an application that lasts about 5 to 10 minutes. Radiofrequency application is one of the methods in which patients have the least complaints after the application. After this procedure, a slight swelling may occur in the area where the procedure was performed for a few days. The success rate of a single session radiofrequency procedure is around 80 percent. If the desired results cannot be achieved in one session, there is no harm in repeating the procedure after 1.5-2 months of waiting.

Septal Deviation

Deviation is the curvature of the cartilage-bone wall in the middle of the nose. The curvature of the nasal bone and cartilage can cause many problems, nasal congestion and headache being the most common. The patients may feel that they cannot breathe through their nose well, and when they wake up in the morning, their mouth might feel dry and rusty. Deviation may cause snoring, continuous mouth breathing and pharyngitis, and may pave the way for sinusitis and nosebleeds. The main purpose of deviation surgeries is to correct the cartilage-bone curvature in the nose by maintaining the support in the front of the nose and on the nasal ridge. The age limit for the surgery is 18, but in some special cases it can also be applied at younger ages. After the deviation surgery, which is usually completed within an hour or so, the patients can leave the hospital on the same day. Buffers are not applied in the surgery. With the help of the application of Hilotherapy masks, post-operative swelling, bruising and pain are not experienced. On the 5th day after the operation, patients can return to their social and business life completely. It is a common situation to overgo aesthetic surgeries with deviation surgeries. If the patients are not aesthetically pleased with the appearance of their nose, they can change their noses into a suitable form relative to their face during the deviation surgery to be performed.
